Description
You may not have heard of the Brook Silverside before, and neither had we until the fall of 2025. While fishing the Lower Niagara, we frequently noticed small baitfish drifting past. After scooping one up and doing a little research, we discovered they were Brook Silversides-a common forage fish with an appearance somewhat similar to a small smelt.
They represented an easy meal, and the fish seemed to be keyed in on them. Once we switched to a bait with a similar appearance, we turned a slow day into a great one.
It appeared that rough conditions on Lake Erie were washing these small baitfish down the river, where they quickly became part of the food chain. We took notice-and now the Brook Silverside is part of the TailOut lineup.
